At
the March meeting of the Karst Waters Institute, the Board of Directors
approved a proposal for an upcoming conference. The meeting will
be entitled “Karst Frontiers: Florida and Related Environments”.
Although the focus of the meeting will be the Floridian karst and aquifer,
connections with similar environments around the world will also be explored
imparting an international flavor on the conference. The goal of
the conference is to highlight the differences between the karst of Florida
and related environments and the more “traditional” karst of continental
interiors. These contrasts include the young age of coastal and island
carbonates, the influence of glacio-eustasy, fresh and salt water mixing,
and the subtropical/ tropical setting.
The conference will be held 06-10 March 2002 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. The organizing committee is chaired by John Mylroie and its members include Jack Hess, Horton Hobbs, Bill Jones, Brian Katz, Jon Martin, Art Palmer, Ira Sasowsky, Will White, and Carol Wicks. Oral presentations will be by invitation only, with poster sessions to accommodate volunteered papers by conference attendees. There will be no concurrent sessions, enabling attendees to the conference the opportunity to fully participate in the exchange of information and ideas. At this time the detailed itinerary and program format for the conference are still being worked out. A banquet with a keynote speaker and cocktail gatherings are planned. Additionally, plans for a field trip during the meeting are in the discussion stage. Costs for conference attendees will be available when details are worked out. Please keep a lookout for future updates over the next several months!!
