KWI CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

Around the world, in island and other environments, scientists have been working to understand how karst behaves in young limestones. The symposium "Karst Frontiers: Florida and Related Environments" has been organized to bring together scientists where they can exchange ideas and and share these ideas with people from government, conservation and private agencies that must make land-use decisions in karst areas. Florida was chosen as the focus for the Symposium as its karst, while well known, is poorly understood. During the past decade, the population of Florida has increased dramatically. That has been accompanied by increased use of groundwater for a water supply and the potential for groundwater contamination. By extension, the Symposium seeks information and discussion on critical aquifers such as the Edwards Aquifer of Texas, the Yucatan aquifer of Mexico, and carbonate island aquifers around the world. Carbonate islands share the same water quality and quantity problems that Florida has, but because of karst flow these problems can be magnified. This symposium is organized in a manner which will encourage discussion among the participants (total participation is planned at 100-120 people).
